Wednesday's NAP, Scorpio Rising, was beaten at Worcester, and there's no softening it: he finished last of the six runners, a long way behind. We independently checked the result against outside sources before writing this up. Talk To The Man won for Dan and Harry Skelton at 15/8, with Klimt Madrik (3/1) second and Bill Joyce (10/1) third.
Scorpio Rising was well backed, going off the 6/4 favourite against the 15/8 on our card. The race commentary has him racing prominently early, dropping to last after the ninth fence, weakening from four out and being tailed off. The official going on the day was good to soft, a little softer than the good shown on our card.
Because we recommended each-way this time, it's worth being clear: with six runners, he'd have needed to finish in the places for the place part to pay, and he didn't, so both halves of an each-way bet lost.
We named the concerns plainly before the race, and the Expert View itself called three of them "the clear worry." He was returning from 193 days off. He'd finished seventh last time, straight after a run of four wins. He carried 159lb. And it was a beginners' chase, with the card not telling us whether his wins had come over hurdles or fences. We recommended a reduced stake for exactly those reasons.
We can't say from the result which of those concerns mattered most, and we won't pretend to. But a horse that weakens and is tailed off after a long absence and a poor last run is a fair illustration of why we flag layoffs and recent defeats as real risks, not boxes to tick. A strong record from earlier in the year counted for very little on the day.
