The Draw in Horse Racing Explained — Why Your Stall Number Can Matter

On Friday, our NAP Musical Times won the Fillies' Mile despite spending much of the race hemmed in on the stands' rail. It's a good reminder of why the draw is one of the details we always flag on a card.

What the draw is. In flat racing, horses start from numbered stalls, and the draw is simply the stall each horse is allocated. Stall 1 is normally the one closest to the inside rail, and higher numbers sit progressively wider. Each runner's number appears on the racecard next to its name, as in "draw 8."

Why it can matter. The draw can affect how a race unfolds. A wide stall can mean covering extra ground round a bend or finding yourself on the wrong side of a track if the pace forms elsewhere. A low stall can mean saving ground but risking getting boxed in. How much any of this matters is not fixed: it depends on the course, the distance, the ground and how many runners there are.

It varies track by track. On some courses and distances there's a well-known bias towards one side, and on others the draw is close to irrelevant. That bias can also change with the going, because runners tend to look for the best ground. For that reason, a general rule is only a starting point, and the sensible check is to look at how the day's earlier races have been run.

It matters less in small fields, but not never. With eight runners, as in Friday's Fillies' Mile, there's less congestion than in a big handicap, but as Musical Times showed, a horse can still find itself short of room when the field bunches up against a rail.

How we use it. When a draw appears as a concern, as it did on Musical Times' card, we flag it and don't pretend to know how much it will matter. The Expert View on that card named the weight as the main risk, and the draw sat alongside it as a question mark. She overcame it, but we'd rather name a doubt than ignore it.
