Our last three NAPs won at three very different tracks, which makes this a good moment to compare them. The same horse can look very different depending on where it runs, and knowing what each track asks is a real edge in reading a card.
Pontefract: the stiff test. Narrjoo won here on Monday. Pontefract is a left-handed, undulating flat course, known as a stiff, testing track where stamina and balance count, especially up the closing stages. Proven stamina is a useful signal at a track like this, and a mile here can feel longer than a mile somewhere flatter.
Huntingdon: the fast oval. Broadway Honey won here on Tuesday. It's a right-handed, flat oval of roughly a mile and a half with easy bends, hosting National Hunt racing only. Course guides describe it as favouring speed and fluent jumping over raw stamina, though it can turn testing after rain because it sits on a floodplain. Broadway Honey made all the running, though she did make two jumping mistakes.
Kempton: the consistent surface. Twelve Bars won here on Wednesday. The all-weather track is a floodlit Polytrack, opened in 2006, and is a right-handed oval. Polytrack drains within minutes and behaves much the same through the seasons, so the going is almost always "standard," with "standard to slow" used occasionally when it has been rolled or watered. That consistency makes form easier to compare, but it also means the surface itself is rarely the excuse.
What the comparison shows. At Pontefract, the question is whether a horse truly stays. At Huntingdon, it's whether it jumps and travels quickly. At Kempton, the surface removes most of the going question, so the usual factors like form, connections and price carry more weight. A horse that excels at one doesn't automatically do so at another, so course form is always worth checking.
One caution. Three winning favourites at three tracks is a small sample, and none of them makes a track pattern. We'd be wary of taking a bias from one race, and each track guide is a starting point, not a rule.
