Hamilton Park Horse Racing Tips — A Guide to Scotland's Flat Track

We flag trainer form on pretty much every NAP we publish, and every so often it comes back cold — a strike rate in the single digits or low teens over the last fortnight. It looks like a warning sign, and often it should be treated as one. But it's worth being precise about what a 14-day figure actually is, and isn't, telling you.

It's a small sample. A yard running 40-70 horses over two weeks is a real number, but it's still a short window. A trainer can go through a genuine two-week cold spell — horses just missing out, seconds and thirds piling up instead of wins — without anything underlying having changed about the quality of the string. The reverse is true too: a hot fortnight doesn't mean a yard is suddenly training better, it can just mean the placed-to-win conversion rate had a good run.

It doesn't distinguish between "not winning" and "not performing." A trainer can have five horses run well, finish 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 2nd, 3rd over a fortnight and show up with a poor strike rate despite the horses clearly working. That's a different situation to a yard where horses are turning up and running flat. The 14-day number alone can't tell you which one you're looking at — it just counts wins over runners.

It's most useful as a direction, not a verdict. A cold figure is worth factoring in and worth being upfront about — we do that on every card where it applies. But it's one input alongside the horse's own form, the specific race, and the booking, not a single number that overrides everything else. Yesterday's By Jove Grace NAP is a working example: a 9% yard figure was a genuine concern worth stating plainly, and the horse won anyway, because her own placed-but-not-yet-winning form line turned out to matter more on the day than the yard's recent conversion rate.

The honest approach is to state the number, say what it does and doesn't tell you, and let it inform the stake and the type of bet — reduced, each-way, more cautious — rather than either ignoring it or treating it as disqualifying on its own.
