Three NAP Winners in a Row, Then Kalpana Beaten at Ascot — The Honest Recap

Three NAP Winners in a Row, Then Kalpana Beaten at Ascot — The Honest Recap

Four NAPs, three winners and one beaten favourite, and every one of them is worth recapping plainly. We independently checked each result against outside sources before writing this up.

Magnetude won the Juvenile Hurdle at Wetherby on Wednesday under Jonathan Burke for trainer James Owen, going off at 2/5, shorter than the 4/7 on our card. When we published we called it the thinnest case we'd put forward, with no recorded form, no rating and a very short price, and we suggested a small stake at most. He won, though not tidily. The race commentary has him jumping slowly at the fifth, non-fluent three from home and making a mistake at the last before being ridden to lead near the finish. Jambearee (28/1) was second and Royal Sapphire (5/2) third.

Kabral Du Mathan won the beginners' chase at Perth on Thursday for Dan Skelton and Harry Skelton at 2/9, a slightly bigger price than our 1/5. We had flagged a 217-day absence, a fourth place last time, top weight, a rating mismatch on the card and the possibility that this was his first run over fences. It was his first start over fences, and Racing Post reports he was foot perfect, cruised home unchallenged and was well clear at the line, with Hold The Serve second. The trainer called him "a really high-class horse" and has the Arkle at the Cheltenham Festival in mind.

Arthurian won the maiden at Haydock on Friday under Oisin Murphy for Andrew Balding, but by only half a length. He was the 2/7 favourite, shorter than our 1/3, and La Torre (3/1) ran him close, with Top Of The World (18/1) third. We had flagged that he'd had four runs without a win, that the ground was heavy and that a generic Expert View left us short of detail. It was the narrowest of the three, and a reminder that a heavy-ground maiden at a very short price can be a closer call than the odds suggest.

Kalpana was beaten in the Group 1 Fillies & Mares Stakes at Ascot on Saturday, finishing seventh as the evens favourite. Minnie Hauk won for Aidan O'Brien and Ryan Moore at 5/1, with Believed (16/1) second and Lilt (6/1) third, and Racing Post has Kalpana beaten around eight and a half lengths. We had named the weight (133lb, "a notable burden"), a beaten fifth just 13 days earlier, a rating mismatch and the step into a Group 1 field, and we recommended win-only at a reduced stake. Two beaten runs in a fortnight is the clearest message: the quick return after a defeat was one of our named concerns, and it didn't go her way.

So the three-day run of winners ended at Ascot, and we're not treating it as a streak that continues. It's a set of results, written up in the order they happened. We'll keep naming the concerns before the race and the outcomes afterwards, and we'll confirm settled stakes and returns before we publish any.
