Novice, Maiden and Handicap Races Explained — What the Race Type Tells You

Look at this fortnight's NAPs and you'll see a mix of race types: a novice stakes at Southwell, a maiden at Haydock, a beginners' chase at Perth and a juvenile hurdle at Wetherby. The race type tells you something useful before you've looked at a single horse.

Maiden races. A maiden is a race for horses that have never won. It's where a young horse usually starts its career, and it's where the form is thinnest, because the runners have little or no winning record to compare. Arthurian ran in one at Haydock last week, having had four runs without a win, and won by half a length.

Novice races. A novice race is generally open to horses with only a limited number of wins to their name. The exact limit depends on the race, so it's always worth reading the conditions rather than assuming. Im The One, with a win and a second behind her, ran in a novice stakes at Southwell. The thing to remember is that novice fields mix very different horses, some with real ability and some who've yet to show much, which makes the form harder to line up.

Beginners' and juvenile races over jumps. A beginners' chase is generally for horses new to fences, and a juvenile hurdle is for 3-year-olds. Kabral Du Mathan won his beginners' chase at Perth on his first start over fences, and Magnetude won a juvenile hurdle at Wetherby. Over jumps, how a horse jumps is a question the form line can't always answer.

Handicaps. In a handicap, each horse is given a weight based on its official rating, with the aim of giving every runner a similar chance. The better the horse, the more it carries. That's why weight is so central to reading a handicap, and why a horse carrying top weight, as Kabral Du Mathan's card flagged, can be a concern.

Why it matters. A maiden or novice race means thinner form and bigger unknowns. A handicap means the weight has already been used to level things up. The same short price means something different in each: a 1/2 shot in a novice stakes has to overcome much more uncertainty than the price suggests, which is why we flag the race type alongside the going, the weight and the layoff.
