Together Now Wins at the Curragh — and Im The One Confirmed Beaten a Short Head

Tuesday's NAP, Together Now, won the Bill Hanlon Memorial Fillies Maiden at the Curragh, and we've independently checked the result against outside sources before writing this up. She won by three and three-quarter lengths under Ryan Moore for Aidan O'Brien, with Sounds Great (9/1) second and Loosen And Limber (80/1) third, a nose further back.

On the price: our card had her at 3/10, and she went off the 1/5 favourite, which is shorter. Anyone who took the starting price would have been paid a little less than at our published price. We don't have a confirmed stake and return for this one yet, so we're not publishing a figure.

It's worth being clear about what kind of win this was. A maiden is a race for horses that have never won, so she came into it without a victory to her name, and the market made her a very short price nonetheless, with the strength of her connections no doubt part of that. She justified it comfortably. The going was yielding, and the results page lists the winning time as more than eight seconds slower than standard, so it was a test of stamina over a mile and a half as much as of speed.

A confirmed update on Monday's result. In yesterday's post we told you Im The One had finished second at Southwell, and that we'd only been able to confirm it from one source at the time. We've now confirmed it with a second. She was beaten a short head by Amazonica (5/1), with Joulany third, four and a half lengths back. The race commentary says she made the running, quickened the pace from three furlongs out, bumped a rival over two furlongs out, was headed inside the final furlong and was slightly hampered close home. It was about as narrow a defeat as there is, but it was a defeat, and we're recording it as one.

So the last two NAPs split: one beaten by the smallest of margins, one a comfortable winner. Both were short-priced favourites, and between them they show the same thing we keep coming back to. A short price is the market's opinion, not a guarantee, and the concerns on the card are what you size your stake around.
